The Shortest Incantation

Reading note from Onmyōji (陰陽師) by Baku Yumemakura. Abe no Seimei to Minamoto no Hiromasa:

The shortest incantation in this world is a name.

「この世でいちばん短い呪は、名だね」

An incantation is binding. An incantation is the binding of a thing’s true nature.

「呪というのはね、もののありようを縛ることなのだよ」

To give a thing a name is to fix what it is.

「名をつけるということは、そのものを規定してしまうことなんだ」
